Technically, it may have been raining on Friday, but, down at the South Beach Playground, bejiggers, the sun was shining.
Opening a little early for one special day for those kids who wouldn’t normally get to enjoy all the swings and roundabouts of a playground, Greystones’ latest addition came alive with laughter and smiles that could blow even the biggest cloud away.
For the committee behind this outdoor House of Fun, one of the main aims of the €250,000, state-of-the-art playground was to make it all-inclusive.
And so, there’s a swing that houses a wheelchair, a large-scale see-saw that has enough room to sit or lie on, access paths and designs to the sandpit worktops, music den and picnic benches, a sensory path, swings for all ages and abilities, and on and on.
It meant that, for some Greystones kids on Friday, this was the very first time that they got to play just like their siblings and their friends.
Which may explain why there were quite a few teary-eyed parents on the day.
The committee are extending this invitation to other special needs groups in the area to come join them for another VIP day, so their kids can check out just what’s available to them here. Just email email@example.com.
Jennifer, Niamh and the rest of the gang also want to thank Wicklow County Council for not only facilitating Friday’s big day, but also – and this is important, people – putting up a whopping €150,000 towards this incredible playground.
With the very final safety checks now having been completed, the South Beach Playground should be open over the coming week. In the meantime, you can take our special guided video tour right about here.
