he local crime surge that unsurprisingly followed Wicklow County Council’s dumbfounding decision to plonk a bunch of Love/Hate extras into a quiet, close-knit Last Of The Summer Wine village has begun to take its toll in more ways than one.

Delgany is far too sleepy a place for Podge & Rodge, never mind Nidge & Fran.

The result of such a move means that, right now, if you don’t live on an estate around here where the cars have been broken into en masse over the last few months, you almost certainly know someone who does.

The very latest smash & grab spree happened in the wee-wee hours of Tuesday morning, when a total of 32 cars were broken into in The Burnaby, Heathervue, Hillside and beyond.

There was also the attempted robbery of AMOC jewellers on the main street, the thief here getting caught with the stolen property on him and shipped off to Bray Garda station.

The initial belief was that the car break-ins must have been the work of the same people believed to be responsible for the recent spate of similar robberies around Delgany. These particular suspects are very much known to the gardaí, and they’re clearly happy to flaunt their criminal intentions, calling into Delgany shops to threaten and taunt staff, and brazenly sauntering out of Pigeon House café with the tip jar, in broad daylight.

Turns out though, Tuesday’s crime spree was actually the work of a different scumbag. Well, two scumbags, to be precise. The thief taken into custody is a Greystones youth – a wiry little fecker, according to CCTV witnesses,and  just under 18 years of age – whilst his accomplice hails from Bray.

There are murmurs that both are connected to the Delgany dipshits, but, best not to speculate on such serious matters. Either way, it will throw a new twist on the planned emergency meeting by local residents in The Pigeon House this week.

Naturally, no one wants a screaming mob with pitchforks trying to tackle this ludicrous and increasingly stressful state of affairs.

It’s Wicklow County Council who should be putting out this fire. Here’s hoping they have the wisdom and the will to sort this nightmare out before someone gets hurt…
