Wicklow Hospice Secures Budget 2020 Funding

Latest press release from Simon Harris TD, issued on Tuesday, October 8th 2019…

Wicklow TD Simon Harris has confirmed funding for Wicklow Hospice is included in Budget 2020.

Mr Harris said, “It is a testament to the local community that we have reached this point. Their perseverance and fundraising has been coupled with State funding to ensure our community can access this specialist care. I turned the sod of the site in 2018 and now we are on the cusp of opening this state-of-the-art facility. It has been my absolute privilege to stand with the community throughout this journey.

“I know it has been a long journey for the community and we are almost nearing the end and we hope to be in a position to announce an opening date next month.”

At present, there are 214 specialist palliative care beds in 11 locations nationwide. This announcement will see 15 beds open in Wicklow Hospice and another 40 beds across the country. Once these beds come into operation, the Government will have increased the number of hospice beds by 35% since coming into office in 2016.

“This highlights our determination to provide better access to specialist in-patient palliative care across the country,” continued Harris.

“Ireland has a well-earned reputation for excellence in the provision of palliative care, and we will continue to expand services in this regard.”
