Don’t you just love it when a smart, simple and sweetly sensible plan comes together…?

No sooner was it announced that Greystones’ South Beach was about to become wheelchair accessible than Postman Pat was delivering the life-changing AccessRec mats all the way from France.

The first time being employed in Ireland – we think – these AccessRec mats (think Mobi Mats, only cheaper) will help make our great big sandy hangout open to anyone who might just have trouble getting across those millions of tiny, sly and shifty grains.

There’s been sterling work over the years, trying to solve this problem for those with limited mobility, but this year, thanks to campaigning mum Julia Carrick and Wicklow Sports Partnership office Andrew McBride, we’ve finally cracked the code.

For quite a chunk of the town, they can now proudly shout, hey, we got 99 problems, but the beach ain’t one.

We caught up with young Kevin Barry and his co-workers this morning, as they rolled out the blue carpet for the town’s VIPs…

Now, go explore our South Beach archives here. Now.

How exciting to see the beach mat being installed after so many years campaigning. BUT is this a joke! Or did the installers not read the instructions properly ! Why on earth is the mat so far from the water’s edge ? What purpose does it serve to have people on walkers and wheelchairs going for a stroll on a mat a million miles miles from the water. This is not how they work all over Europe. And this is not their function. I could cry with the frustration of it all.

If you check the interview, they had to measure the tide, and how far it can come in. I’m guessing there would be an issue of someone was stranded by water. Still, early days – I’m sure they’ll discover the safest lines and times to move it closer to the water itself…
