Your Greystones Week


Despite the fact that most Greystonians are in pyjamas, half-asleep and sipping  devilment by 8pm every night, it would still be fair to say that this is a town that never sleeps.

Something GG has learnt the hard way, having stupidly taken on the task of keeping you lazy, half-drunk, half-assed Greystonians informed of the daily goings-on just outside your doorstep.

With a healthy nocturnal life too, as the old saying goes, there’s something for everyone, from birdwatching to badminton, from the blues to Bach, from booze to Bible studies.

There’s also Joe and his alpacas up just outside Newtownmountkennedy, and generally open all year round, or Lalli de Buitlear, and her Old Delgany Burial Ground walks & talks, available on request.

There are also fun and games at the Greystones Film Club, plus, live satellite links with the likes of The Met, The Bolshoi Ballet and The National Theatre at The Whale.

Monday 10th Dec

Running from 10am to 1pm, the Greystones Art Group‘s weekly get-together at SoBe is a chance to express yourself, baby. Whilst joining one of Ireland’s oldest art groups, this particular batch of art lovers having first come together way back in 1965. Be the holy!

Monday mornings, from 9am to noon, Me & The Moon are hosting PARENT & TODDLER art workshops, perfect for a little me time. For both parent and toddler.

For those kids who’d like to just SING, SING, SING, the Greystones Youth Choir will be harmony-rockin’ Shoreline at 4pm for 25 weeks from October 15th, from 4.15pm to 5.45pm, to perfect those harmonies. And have FUN! And all for just €20!

Kicking off in Newtown from 7.45am to 8.45am, then Greystones Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, and Newcastle Thursdays, YOGA & MINDFULNESS WITH ANGELIKA is a grand way to start your day/week/new life.

Monday is also the day you can take a chance on the ÉIRE ÓG LOTTERY, or, if this language is still a little DOUBLE-DUTCH to you, take some FREE ENGLISH CLASSES over in Kilcoole.

For the young at heart, there are AQUA AEROBICS down at Shoreline from noon to 1pm. The cost is €4.50, and you can get in touch on greystones@shorelineleisure.ie.

You can also get yourself in shape with MARK CREAN and his FITTSTONES classes, happening every Monday and Wednesday. YOWSA!

Tuesday 11th Dec

Raising money for their groovy new youth centre on Trafalgar Road, those crazy Coolnagreina cats host their monthly fundraising COFFEE MORNING today, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Tonight, at 8pm, there’s a WREATH-MAKING WORKSHOP at the Horse & Hound, a fundraiser for de Delgany Tidy Towns. It costs €25 for the night, and you can book your spot by emailing events@delgany.ie.

Also happening tonight is a demonstration of BASKET WEAVING, with Aoife Patterson the Greystones Art Group‘s special guest for the evening. You can join the basket cases at 8pm in Coolnagreina. It’s a fiver for non-members.

Also on tonight, the monthly Greystones Municipal District Meeting will start a half-hour early, at 7pm, for a presentation for a championship presentation to the Éire Óg U17s. Go on, ya GOOD THINGS!

The long-running STOP SMOKING COURSE takes place every Tuesday evening at the Greystones Cancer Support on La Touche Place. Do it. For longer.

In the evening, you can get your diddley-aye fix with the long-running Tuesday night TRAD SESSION in Dann’s, whilst SuperValu continue their shopping experience every Tuesday evening… 

Wednesday 12th Dec

They’ve been carol singing all around town for over 60 years, raising money for deserving charities whilst instilling the spirit of Christmas in every Greystonian. Whether they want it or not. Tonight, the Cecil Beare Carol Singers are hitting the Burnaby area, with the gang meeting at Nature’s Gold at 7.20pm. Make sure you got some change, kids!

Running from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Kilcoole Community Centre, Bray Area Partnership are offering free advice on finding and applying for jobs. Covering everything from JobsPlus to Back To Work schemes, this service is free, baby!

A new addition to the town, Lynne Reece Loftus will be hosting KIDS ART & CRAFT CLASSES upstairs in Art & Hobby in Blacklion, at 4.30pm and 5.30pm, with the six one-hour classes costing €65, and a €5 discount for siblings. To book your spot, you can text or call Lynne on 0862517361.

For the lads, there’s THE MEN’S SHED twice-weekly meeting at 10am (returning Friday, at the same time), along with the weekly CHILDREN’S STORYTIME at the Greystones Library, from 10.30am, whilst, starting back September 12th, ME & THE MOON have their kids art workshops in the Kilian Family Centre – from 3.30pm to 4.30pm for 4- to 7-year-olds and 4.30pm to 5.30pm for 8- to 12-year-olds.

Frances Browner is the brains behind a new Greystones writing group, SCRIOBH ARÍS, meeting at 7.30pm every Wednesday – bar the last of each month – in the Greystones Cancer Support HQ on La Touche Place.

Meeting outside The Horse & Hound in Delgany at 3pm, Michael Woods O’Rourke (and his freeloading twin brother) have put together a sturdy four-hour walk & talk history tour of the area that’s already getting rave reviews.

Bring mixers. And a blanket.

Suitable for kids aged 7 upwards, CODERDOJO GREYSTONES offer free computer classes and workshops, tonight, 7.15pm in St Kevin’s. Given that it’s free, BOOKING is essential, baby.

For those into flexing their brains, the GREYSTONES BRIDGE CLUB meet every Wednesday evening down at their Victoria Road HQ, whilst the notorious GREYSTONES ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION play whist from 8pm over at Kilian House Family Centre.

For those keen to flex their muscles, Mark Crean’s FITTSTONES classes are on both Monday and Wednesday evenings, whilst there’s Yoga & Mindfulness with ANGELIKA at St Patrick’s Church from 8pm to 9pm.

Gotta love the long-running Wednesday night treat over at THE BEACH HOUSE, where Mike Morrissey is your sheriff for QUIZ & BINGO NIGHT! Just €2 a card, kids, and the fun kicks off at 10pm.

The big one tonight is THE EMMA & JULIE SHOW at The Whale, the viral sensations bringing the funny to Greystones. About time!

Happening from 3pm to 5pm every first and third Thursday down at Shoreline, the Greystones Parkinson’s Social Club is a chance to hang out, having some tea & coffee, and a chat, whilst also getting support and advice. You can find out more by contacting Eva White on 012819578.

In the morning, Angelika is offering us all some YOGA & MINDFULNESS in Newcastle from 10.30am to 12am and at St Patrick’s from 8pm to 9pm, and WICKLOW DEMENTIA SUPPORT gets underway at The Methodist Hall in Wicklow at 10.30am, whilst in the evening, over at Greystones Family Resource, their ADVENTURE YOUTH CLUB for boys and girls between 12 and 14 kicks off every Thursday at 5.30pm.

Lock of your grandads! The Delgany Guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association will be getting up to no good – and illegal speed knitting at St Patrick’s from 2pm today. You have been warned.

There’s also that BRAY GREYSTONES BADMINTON CLUB, meeting on Thursdays (and Wednesdays) at 8.30pm and Sundays at 4pm.

In the evening, Soul Agreed are headling a Lakers soul night fundraiser at The Martello. Kick-off is 8pm. Be there. Be funky.

Running from Thursday to Sunday, Chakra have introduced their Festive Feast, a value Christmas menu that boasts two-course meals for €21 and three-course meals for €25. Yum!

The Greystones Tidy Towns gang are having their AGM in the Greystones Lawn Tennis Club at 7.30pm, and everyone is invited, tonight, and forever. There will be drinks in de bar at 8.30pm

Friday 14th Dec

Happening on the 2nd Friday of each month at the Bray Music Centre on Florence Road, the LA LECHE LEAGUE is a gathering for new mothers and their babies, so they can figure out what the hell is going on.

Also, GREYSTONES ALZHEIMER FRIENDS take a trip down MEMORY LANE in St Patrick’s Parish Hall, from 11.30am to 1pm, all those hits from the ’50s and ’60s being blasted for a singalong, whilst over at THE WHALE, the box-office is open from 11am to noon – for those of you who like that one-on-one experience when booking your CULTURAL KICKS

There’s also the twice-weekly MEN’S SHED (the other day being Wednesdays) down at the Scout’s Den behind the fire station.

On the kiddie front, they can go wild in the country with SQUIRREL’S SCRAMBLE in the beautiful surrounds of the KILRUDDERY ESTATE.

With Christmas upon us, there will be free parking, for up to two hours, on Greystones main street every Saturday, up until the big day.

In the morning, those clever kids at Coláiste over in Kilcoole are hosting a Student Enterprise Christmas Market, complete with Santa, homemade goodies and yummy treats. The fun runs from 10.30am to 1pm, baby!

A sweet way for the family to start the day is with BirdWatch Ireland, who will be examining The Birds Of Greystones Harbour from 10am. Boom!

For any budding young football superstars, Greystones United AFC are hosting their 2006 Trials this morning, from 11am to 1pm down at their Woodlands HQ.

For lovers of all things Christmas, Santa is back at Tesco this afternoon, loitering with intent to spread some festive cheer today and tomorrow, from noon to 4pm. Nice.

The big one today is the madcap Reuben bringing his many, many years of magic and mayhem for kids to The Whale for a 4pm matinee. Do it!

the mighty GREYSTONES HARBOUR CHRISTMAS MARKET, running every Friday and Saturday, 11am to 5pm, up until that big birthday bash on the 25th. Do it!

There’s also the groovy GEORGIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET over at Luisne – the perfect setting for Yuletide yumminess.

With GRAPE gone Full Santa and St David’s Car Boot Sale in hibernation, you’ll have to get your regular car boot-style bargain fix at the ENNISKERRY CHURCH HALL CRAFT FAIR, from 10am to 6pm, but only if you feel like venturing beyond city limits.

At 7pm, Verdi’s La Traviata will be beamed live via satellite into little old Greystones. At The Whale, to be precise. For anyone interested in turning their culture kicks all the way up to 11. Boom!

There’s also Sherron’s 5RHYTHMS DANCE MEDITATION, getting your morning started in a trance down at Sobe from 11am to 1pm. Back September 9th, this one also bounces to an evening session every month, so, check with the lady herself right about here.

Also in the evening, if you’ve got the CURLERS OUT OF YOUR HAIR, there’s BINGO at the Little Flower Hall beside the Holy Redeemer in Bray, the marker-sniffing action kicking off at 8pm.

And parents, take note, the BRADLEY THEATRE SCHOOL are hosting Sunday morning classes for kids from tots to teens, at The Whale. Boom!
