A self-styled citizen journalist and former far-right National Party member, Dwyer confronted the People Before Profit team just outside the Holy Redeemer on Bray’s main street.
For his part, Dwyer attended Bray Garda Station three days later to make a complaint, and to state that he was acting in self-defence.
According to a report in The Bray People today, it was as the People Before Profit group were packing away their gear to leave that, Dwyer claims, Mr O’Connell pushed him in the back, and he instantly pushed back, causing the man to fall over.

sentence for harassing local People Before Profit candidate Kellie O’Connell.
He then produced a selfie-stick from his pocket because, Dwyer told the court, Mr O’Connell had then attempted to kick him. The accused maintained that he was “completely acting in self-defence”.

Philip Dwyer, a citizen journalist and long‑time postman, was a victim of verbal abuse, by a person who states she sees him as racist and sexist – which is dehumanizing – and this verbal assault seems to have directly led to the physical assault: he was pushed by one person and another attempted to kick him. Verbal dehumanization followed by assault is exactly how attacks escalate, and the focus should be on holding those who verbally and physically attacked him accountable, not on punishing the victim. Everyone should be treated equally under the law, regardless of gender, social position, age, etc.. Hate speech and verbal harrassment, and ad hominum attacks, such as labelling a human being as racist and sexist, while avoiding dialogue, should never justify physical assault.
A balanced report would mention that Phil Dwyer says he was the one assaulted, and has filed an official complaint to that effect in Bray Garda station.

Mr Dwyer, by using his intrusive, bullying, aggressive and intimidating behaviour has shown how we must stand up for our rights to participate in a democratic election. There is something sinister and creepy in his whole demeanour as he tries to twist ‘free speech’ and subjugate women.
