The look of love…
here were hugs, and bouquets of flowers, and plenty of tears on the menu this evening at Pineto’s.
One of Greytones’ most popular fine food emporiums was closing its doors after 22 years.
And one of the town’s most-loved families got a great big send-off today.
Not that they’re actually leaving the
town they love so well. This was, after all, the Vecchio’s second Greystones home, one that they had built up over two decades to being, well, loads and loads of other Greystonian’s second home.
And many of them were here today, to grab their last Pineto’s supper, and to give Bruna, and Anna, and Dario, and Fiore, a farewell hug.
Many came with flowers, the bouquets beginning to clutter up the counter where a constant flow of piping hot brown and bursting paper bags were being handed out, along with a whole lotta free ice creams for all the kids, already happy to be spared some home cooking once again.
Unsurprisingly, the queue was out the door, pretty much from the moment the doors opened at noon, and now it was getting close to closing time. And the queue just kept on getting bigger.
One wily old goat, and his even older – and wilier – old pop reckoned they should be allowed to jump the queue, given that, you know, they were Greystones, “born and bred”, and they would have been turfed out on their ear by the assembled born & bred crowd if it wasn’t for the fact that the duo were more battered than a Pineto cod.
After 22 years, the Vecchio family know how to handle a hungry queue. What they weren’t quite so prepared for was all that love, and those hugs, and the flowers.
And that’s when the tears started, the adults hugging whilst the kid squealed with delight as that free ice cream headed their way.
For anyone needing a Pineto Classico fix in the future, you can take a trip down memory lane, all the way to Rathnew, where the Vecchio’s second much-loved chipper is located.
The food will be every bit as good, of course, but, it won’t be quite the same as grabbing your treat here, in Greystones.
Which is why everyone and her sister came out today…
