Delgany Man Given Trial Date For Child Pornography

Delgany man accused of producing and possessing thousands of child pornography images and video has been told he will stand trial in October.

Alan Cafolla of Kindlestown Heights was at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court this week, charged with 16 counts under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998.

According to a report in The Bray People by Darragh McCann, it was on December 15th 2021, while residing at his home, that the accused produced child pornography for the purpose of distribution, publication, exportation, sale or showing.

The court will be addressing the same allegations on two other dates; December 22nd 2021 and January 8th 2022.

The 26-year-old Mr Cafolla is also accused of possessing a OnePlus A600 mobile phone on which was discovered 3,525 images and 612 videos alleged to constitute child pornography, as well as a computer containing 36 images and three videos.

The court was told that at a previous sitting in April, the defendant intended to plead not guilty. Senior counsel for the defence, Maurice Coffey, had told the court that Mr Cafolla had a medical certificate stating that he was suffering from kidney stones, but Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin was told that the gardaí made enquiries and determined that the accused’s health issues were not kidney stone related.

Directing that a medical certificate be produced stating that Mr Cafolla was unfit to attend court, or that a doctor be made available to testify to his unfitness, the judge warned that a bench warrant would otherwise be issued for his arrest.

With the trial originally listed for 2022, it was decided that Mr Cafolla will appear before Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court on October 20th.
