Greystones erupted in celebration this afternoon as the Éire Óg U15 Boys Football team returned home as John West Féile Peile na nÓg Division 4 All-Ireland Champions, following a magnificent day of football in Derry on Saturday 27th June.
The boys travelled north to St Mary’s GAC, Bannagher, Co. Derry, as part of Group 1 of the Football Division 4 competition, facing Na Piarsaigh Doire Trasna (Derry), St Patrick’s (Carlow), and Killygarry (Cavan). They opened their campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating local side Na Piarsaigh Doire Trasna by 1-2 (5) to 0-3 (3). A hard-fought draw against St Patrick’s of Carlow (1-3 to 1-3) followed, but Éire Óg progressed to the Cup Final as Group 1 runners-up, where they faced Naomh Eanna of Gorey, Wexford, and delivered when it mattered most, winning the Division 4 Cup Final by 1-2 (5) to 0-3 (3).
The homecoming at Páirc Mhic Shuain De Barra on Sunday afternoon was a joyous occasion befitting champions. Club President Ray Barry led the celebrations, joined by Chairperson Larry Howard, and previous Féile-winning managers Fergus O’Carroll and Peter O’Neill men who know better than most what this achievement means to the club and the wider community.
Councillor Mark Barry, coach with the team and former Vice Chairperson of the club, was among those who welcomed the champions home to scenes of great pride and emotion, along with a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters who had followed every kick of the ball throughout the weekend.
The kit for the trip was generously sponsored by Mick Browne of BBA Architecture, with Paddy Holohan’s SuperValu Greystones providing food and snacks for the lads on their journey north community support that perfectly complemented the spirit of the occasion.
This victory adds another golden chapter to the Éire Óg Greystones story. The club has previously won the All-Ireland Féile on two occasions in 2007 and 2016 and this outstanding U15 group now takes its rightful place among the club’s most celebrated teams.
The achievement is a testament to the dedication of the players, their management team, and the parents and supporters who made the journey to Derry and cheered from home throughout the competition.
Maith sibh, buachaillí. Lá stairiúil do Chlub Éire Óg Greystones.
