Greystones’ Latest Monopoly Moves

On the same morning that Mrs Robinson’s finally reopens its doors – after all those scurrilous rumours – Greystones’ landscape continues to change for businesses.

And as the old saying goes, when one door closes, another opens.

Or, in the case of Greystones, when one coffee shop closes, another opens, with Brunel’s realising – for now, at least – it’s just a little too snug for social distancing, whilst just up the road, the rejigged, reimagined and now retail Waverly House is about to welcome its very first tenant.

And, yep, it’s going to be a coffee shop.

Talking of coffee shops, it’s been a long, long time since the café with the most interesting back story, Bailey & Pim, have had the lights on. We’ve been in touch, but, no answer as yet. Ditto on Sweeney’s chipper – this is a family that likes to keep its cards close to the chest. We hear it’s a former Charlesland Golf Club chef taking over just the takeaway part.

And talking of chippers, the Muldovian family taking over the recently-vacated Giulio’s on the main street should be opening within a week or so. All going swell.

Another closure in the town is Platinum Pilates, who had been fighting for survival over the past few months, as they renegotiated their tenancy, not only in Greystones but in their other branches. Tentatively reopening six weeks ago, it would appear Platinum is now permanently closed.

On the plus side, that great big vacant building beside Aldi is finally going to see some action other than flying stones, as McGovern Estates confirm that a tenant is imminent. They’re just not telling us who it is, as they informed us it’s not the soon-come Street Food Outlets, but is “a few weeks away, and it’s not food“.

As the world still searches for a way around Covid-19, there will undoubtedly be more musical chairs in this town in the coming months.

So, right now, the need to support your neighbour has never been more important…
