Is Greystones A Town Full Of Lazy-Ass Clicktavists?

If you believe the world outside your window was the same it appeared on social media, it would be easy to think Greystones is a town full of shiny, happy people living the full-on Coke commercial.

Helping old ladies across streets, kicking muggers in the nuts, doing the morning shift at Greystones Cancer Support, and then a quick blanket run for the homeless in the town before joining the Greystones Tidy Towns gang for their latest assault on our litter.

Well, think again, my fat friend.

On Saturday, the Greystones Tidy Towns took part in the international Big Beach Clean, a day dedicated to making sure that those Irish people lucky enough to live by the sea showed it some love and respect by picking up all the knacker droppings down on the shoreline.

Picking up their neighbours’ litter is something the volunteers at Greytones Tidy Towns do all year long, of course, but, every now and then, they need a few more hands on deck. And given that there are approximately 39,488 hands in Greystones, the call-up for Saturday’s sunny clean-up was no doubt going to be a breezy walk on the beach.

Well, out of 18,744 Greystonians, a grand total of five volunteers turned up to help on Saturday. Two families. And that was it.

You have to wonder what the 10 volunteers who came down all the way from North Wall must have made of that.

So, next time you’re bouncing around like a gargled Gandhi on social media, clicking the like on that fundraiser, or splashing a heart emoji on this volunteer gathering, consider actually getting off your arse and actually helping. Start a WhatsApp group, get some friends together, and give your kid a valuable lesson in civic pride, in just doing something for others.

Just get offline, and get involved.
