A deceptively angelic Pat Mooney
s we took another dive through Derek Paine‘s towering eight volumes on Greystones of old, we realised that the pictures that made us smile the most are those of the town’s young ‘uns.

The Flynnstones 1979
Especially when the young ‘un in question grew up to be somebody you know.
Take, for example, that angelic young man above. Look at that face. The perfectly pressed clothes, gleaming white. The prayer book, clutched tightly. The gentle smile, aiming high, to the man upstairs.

Pat Mooney at 4am this morning
The mind races as to where such a bright, loving and clearly caring young man might end up in life.
A priest in Africa? A social worker, helping those less unfortunate find a path in life? Maybe even a man of the cloth, fighting the growing darkness of this world with His guiding light?

Sister Anto & Jen on the pull
Or, he could grow up to be Pat Mooney.
Just goes to show, you never can tell when it comes to kids what sort of person is eventually going to come out at the other end. But, right there, deep in childhood, you can always find joy and wonder. Agus laughter.

Arctic Mural May 1985
Below, feast your eyes upon Greystones’ young guns, from little Joe Sweeney already living it large down by the harbour to Derek’s own beautiful children, Gary, Dave and Linda.
We’ll be adding plenty more over the coming months and years, so, if you have any shots of your loved ones back when they were truly loveable, email them right about here.
Just make sure that, you know, you’re not just seeing your kid through a parent’s loving eye.
We don’t want any ugly sprogs messing up our beautiful gallery.

At least one photo look off. (Faces all distorted) Was AI used to fix it?
We have a refund in the post winging its way to you right now. Stay in, in case you miss it.
I see you love a bit of banter, Paul It was actually a genuine question, but I’ll be patiently waiting on the refund now
BTW, if you ever need a hand colouring in the pictures, I’ll gladly do it free of charge without our AI friends. Great work as always.
Much love ❤️
If there’s any there you want to work on, that would be great. Always good to get another take… Cheers
Great photos brings back my childhood. I’m visiting my parents at end of month. I’ll dig around for photos. Went to CBS till 84. Took swim lessons and played football all in Greystones
That would be both rock agus roll. Best email is [email protected]. Cheers.
Any photos of st David’s from about 1969/1970
Loads. We just keep them hidden in a vault.
If we had ’em, kiddo, they’d be here. If you source any, let us know…
Paul, a further image that puzzled me until I got the magnifying glass out. The photo captioned St Kevin’s School Class of 45 puzzled me, not so much that I didn’t recognise any of the boys – after all they would have been at least four years older than me – but that I had no memory of any brick walled school with such large windows anywhere in Blacklion or Greystones. The shield in the foreground has the answer: ” Sraith an Iarthair” – Westland Row, where Jim, Conal and Terry Brennan each went to Secondary School after winning Wicklow County Council scholarships. Jim and I won ours in 1948.
In the 1949 pic of Brother Buckley’s class in Blacklion, Miklos Kos was a very accomplished breast stroke swimmer, a member of a Hungarian family who came to Ireland after World War 2, to the best of my knowledge, Miklos became an executive in ICL in Ireland before moving to Europe, also with ICL.
Fabulous photos nostalgic
Great to see those pics Pablo, you certainly dug up a few surprises! Keep up the good work 🙂
Hi Paul the 4th guy in the Newtown Maytime festival is Gerry Davis.
