Running at Signal Arts Centre from May 12th to 24th, The Shoals of Oceania is the latest exhibition by David Whittredge.

This Greystones artist creates three-dimensional works that combine painting and sculpture into stylised coral reef structures. The new work for this exhibition is focused on climate awareness.

What began as images of marine flora has morphed into imagined versions of alien marine life, abstracted biology, and the endless variations of coral reefs, both living and dying.

“My interest and concern here is for the diminishing number of plant and animal species on earth that ironically is occurring at the same time we are discovering new, strange species in the ocean depths,” says Whittredge. “A healthy coral reef is one of nature’s most astonishing environments. However, global climate change is causing many reefs to weaken and die.

“This catastrophic development has altered the direction of my art toward these saltwater landscapes and the life within.”

The exhibition will be anchored by a five-meter long reef installation.

Running from Tuesday, May 12th to Sunday 24th with a 7pm reception on Friday 15th, the Signal Arts Centre hours are 10am to 5pm daily except Thursday 10am to 7.30pm.
