Digging the new breed…
atest press release from Éire Óg Greystones, issued on Sunday, September
7th 2025…
Éire Óg Greystones Camogie marked a very special milestone on Saturday, 6th September, as the club came together to celebrate 10 years of camogie in the community.
Camogie at Éire Óg Greystones began with a total of 27 youths and 6 adults, prior to this camogie was unheard of in Greystones. The first camogie training session was held one Saturday morning with 2 girls in attendance – one in horse riding gear! In an effort to grow the numbers a flyer drop was organised at the local schools and within the year, they had registered and were fielding teams at local blitzes. The first ever blitz Éire Óg Camogie attended was in May 2014, where the club fielded an U8 and U10 team.
Interest grew quickly, and by 2016 teams were competing at every age group from U8 to U14, followed soon after by U16 and minor squads. In 2019 the club proudly fielded its first adult team, marking another big step forward. Today, the section has flourished into a vibrant community of nearly 300 players, supported by a dedicated group of volunteer coaches and parents. Over the decade, Éire Óg camogie has become about far more than matches and medals — it’s about creating opportunities, building friendships, and living the club’s values of Fun, Inclusivity, Respect, and Effort.
To honour this journey, the celebrations began with a Family Fun Day at the club. Families enjoyed a day packed with children’s games, entertainment, and a community BBQ, creating a real festival atmosphere. The day was brought to a close with heartfelt speeches from pillars of the Éire Óg camogie community, who shared
their memories and experiences of the club’s journey through the years.
Later in the evening, the festivities continued at The Pigeon House, Delgany, where past and present members gathered for music, finger food, and dancing — the perfect way to round off a wonderful day.
The club would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the local sponsors whose generosity helped make the celebrations possible: Centra Delgany, SuperValu Charlesland, Enso Pizza, Elite Hair and Beauty, Up To My Eyes, Halfway Up The Stairs, Farrellys Butchers, Tan-Ya Mobile Tanning, Delgany Wine Cottage, Sweet Boutique, Delgany Pharmacy, Daata, Paddy the Turk Barbers, The Hungry Monk, The Hair Hub, Greystones Business Bureau, N.Y.Eats and Sin É.
Crioch Catering fed us all, Greystones Library provided the kiddies corner games, DMC Events for the inflatables & Karl Quinn for all his advice and support leading up to the day!
It was a day to remember — a chance to celebrate how far camogie has come in Greystones in just ten short years, to thank those who helped shape its story, and to look ahead with pride and excitement to the next decade.
And in the thick of both parties was the ever-reliable, ever-smiling John McGowan – full gallery of over 200 pics from the day are right here.
