Come Fly With Mia

When it comes to art, fashion and style, there’s really only one category that truly matters – timeless.

With popular culture, songs, films, clothes and fads often come and go, but the ones with soul tend to stick around.

And that’s just what Maria Fitzgerald will be celebrating with Old Hollywood Nights & New York Mornings at The Whale this coming Friday.

These are the songs that have lasted a hundred years. The songs that are as heartbreaking and uplifting today as when they were first performed. Songs that have real soul.

Which is something that the beautiful Ms Fitzgerald clearly has plenty of. From Dublin’s National Concert Hall to London’s Regent Park Theatre, from The Late Late Show to Ireland AM, from the RTE Concert Orchestra to the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra, the artist formally known as Mia has been there and sung the hell out of that.

Which may explain why Mia’s debut album, Little Trip To Heaven, made Album Of The Week earlier this year on Lyric FM.

And the top-of-the-range, oven-ready, Grade A band that made that album so special will be joining Mia in Greystones this weekend, with David Wray on piano, Neville Lloyd on double bass, Paul Byrne on drums, Drazen Derek on guitar and Brendan Doyle on saxophone, flute and clarinet.

Ahead of Friday’s Old Hollywood Nights & New York Mornings, we caught up with Mia at The Whale to talk early influences, timeless classics and touching the hem of Marty Whelan…
