Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore, has welcomed confirmation from the National Transport Authority (NTA) that it is planning significant improvements to the TFI Route 133 Bus Éireann service, including increased frequency, additional capacity and operation through the Fassaroe Park and Ride.

The planned upgrade would see additional capacity provided on peak time services, while off peak frequencies would be increased at certain times of the day, making the service more accessible and convenient for passengers travelling between Wicklow and Dublin.

Deputy Whitmore said the proposed improvements would be a positive step forward for commuters and communities that rely on the 133 service.

“Reliable public transport is essential for people travelling to work, education, healthcare appointments and other everyday activities. Any increase in capacity and frequency on the 133 route will make a real difference for existing passengers and encourage more people to choose public transport,” said Deputy Whitmore.

The inclusion of the Fassaroe Park and Ride in the planned route is also expected to improve connectivity and provide commuters with an additional option when travelling towards Dublin.

While welcoming the plans, Deputy Whitmore noted that the improvements are not expected to be introduced in 2026.

“My understanding is that the Government has not provided funding for additional services in 2026, so unfortunately passengers are unlikely to see these improvements in the immediate future. However, I am hopeful that the upgraded service will be rolled out in 2027, and I will be keeping a close eye on its progress,” said Deputy Whitmore.

Deputy Whitmore said she will continue engaging with the NTA and the Department of Transport to ensure the planned improvements are delivered as quickly as possible.

“Public transport investment is vital if we are to meet the needs of our growing communities.

“I welcome this commitment from the NTA and will continue to press for these improvements to be delivered without unnecessary delay.”
