Tánaiste Simon Harris has welcomed the announcement today by Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton that a further 40 special education classes have been sanctioned by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) for the upcoming 2026/2027 school year as part of Tranche 8 of the Government’s special education expansion.

County Wicklow will benefit from two new primary special education classes at Greystones Educate Together National School in Greystones and St Saviour’s National School in Rathdrum.

Today’s announcement brings the total number of new special classes sanctioned for County Wicklow for the 2026/2027 school year to thirteen, across both primary and post-primary level, further building on the significant progress already made through earlier tranches.

Speaking today, Simon Harris said: “I am delighted to welcome the news that two more Wicklow schools : Greystones Educate Together National School and St Saviour’s National School in Rathdrum have been sanctioned for new special classes for the 2026/2027 school year.

“This is about building on the progress we have already made. With today’s announcement, we have now secured thirteen new special classes for County Wicklow for the coming school year, which is a real step forward for families of children with additional needs right across the county. We are making sure that children can access the support they need in their own communities.

“Ensuring that every child in this country has the opportunity to reach their full potential remains my number one priority in Government. These new classes will help ensure that students with special needs receive the tailored education they deserve.

“I want to thank Minister Hildegarde Naughton for her continued commitment to expanding special education provision and for delivering again for Wicklow families in this latest tranche.

“I look forward to engaging with the schools benefitting from today’s announcement and to continuing to work with schools across County Wicklow to see what more we can do for families and children with additional needs.
