through the town, Greystones For Palestine naturally organised a second.
The weather forecast was not good, but as 7.30pm approached yesterday, our regular September rain kept its distance, and the march once again drew the crowds.
Clearly happy to be there, and clearly happy to be dry.
The organisers were hoping for 2,000 protestors over the genocide in Gaza, and the gathering was definitely larger this time around.
As day turned to night, people of all ages trekked through the town before coming to a halt at The Cove, where candles spelled out the simple slogan Free Gaza.
Speaking at the vigil, organiser Fionna Saintraint said: “Our greatest power is to come together, as consumers and political agents. Our power is to bring our voices together and make sure our governments keep speaking up for the Palestinian people and enact sanctions to stop the flow of Irish money to the occupied territories.”
Cllr Mark Barry also spoke to the crowd: “We stand here tonight in The Cove, Greystones, not individuals, but as a community that refuses to be silent. We stand for Gaza because men, women, and children are being murdered every single day through bombs, through starvation, through the deliberate destruction of their homes and futures. What we are witnessing is genocide.
“We are here to say clearly to our government and to Europe: not in our name, and not with our tax money.
The Irish people have spoken, we want the Occupied Territories Bill enacted, we want action that reflects the urgency of this crisis, not words of sympathy without deeds.
“Ireland knows what it is to be oppressed, to be starved, to fight for freedom. That history obliges us to stand with those facing the same today. This is not only about Palestine, it is about the human rights of all people, everywhere. If we allow them to be stripped away in Gaza, they are weakened everywhere.
“So, let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep holding power to account. And let’s make sure our government is left in no doubt: Wicklow, Ireland, and the people gathered here tonight will always stand with justice, with humanity, and with Palestine. Free Palestine.”
Across The Irish Sea meanwhile, President Joffrey was speaking on behalf of America, stating that, in spite of the international
recognition of a genocide being conducted in Gaza, he didn’t believe in recognising a Palestinian state.
Joining the vigil once again last night was our trusty snapper, John McGowan. You can check out his full gallery of hi-res pics right here.
