Golf, of course, isn’t for everyone…
The great American wit Mark Twain once described golf as “a good walk spoiled”. National Lampoon reckoned that it was ‘not so much a sport as an insult to lawns’. H.G. Wells wrote in 1915, ‘The uglier a man’s legs are, the better he plays golf’, but I think he might have been just working through some issues there.
It’s clear when you meet Rob Lawless that none of the above will strike a chord, his childhood growing up on Lower Kindlestown Road having been dominated by the sport. Come to think of it, so has the rest of his life, Rob currently wowing them on the golf course up at Glen Of The Downs on a daily basis. Where he’s regarded as one of the greatest swingers around.
And not only does Rob play golf pretty much every day, but he also writes about it, in his fine blog, Straight Down The Middle. His most recent interview was with another Greystones golfing nut, Paul Dunne. Oh, and his late father would have been more than a little proud when the family pulled together the inaugural Ed Lawless Golf Classic at Greystones Golf Club on April 1st this year.
Knowing little to feck-all about golf here at GG HQ, when we heard earlier today that Rob had nabbed a spot on the Irish Open Pro Am coming up at the K Club at the end of the month, we thought we should pay the man a visit. And find out all about, you know, innings, and conversions, and achieving every golfer’s dream – hitting that bullseye…
Howzat!
And here’s that winning viral hit…
