Greystones Sailing Club Hits 50

Fittingly, it was a grand night for sailing, and, as it turned out, a grand night for partying too, as a Greystones institution marked its 50th birthday with a Big Barn Banquet.

All of Greystones sailing elite were there – with more than a couple of hangers-on and general party spongers – for a night all about remembering.

Remembering not only five decades of fun and games on the waves but those four brave souls who had the bright idea to start the Greystones Sailing Club way back in June, 1968.

Those four founding members being Dermod Cafferkey, Gordon Clarke, John Roy, Toby Davis and Ian Mitchell. Naturally, the fantastic five’s families were all present and correct for the celebrations last night, with Dermod’s son, Darragh, giving a rousing speech. Also up on the podium on the night was Jack Roy, president of the Irish Sailing Association, whilst in among the 200 guests was Simon Harris TD and his lovely wife, .

But, eh, no GG. Not sure why.

A big happy birthday to the club, and all who sail in her. Here’s to the next 50, and well, well beyond…
