atest press release from the notorious Kilquade Cup gang, issued on Friday, May 3rd 2024…
The sun shone, the course was immaculate, Delgany Clubhouse was buzzing, the prizes were piled high, and Dinny Doyle was serving pulled pork rolls and beer on the 9th; so, it had to be Kilquade Cup Day in Delgany Golf Club!
The annual fundraiser in aid of the Kilquade parish churches and community, on Thursday May 2nd, saw the 18-hole Kilquade Cup competition won by the Colliers’ team of Sam Collier, Gerard Gilroy, Derek Wynne and Luke O’Connor.
A team from The Grove Bar took second, while third prize went to the Ultima Oil team, and the prizes were presented by Barry Doyle of Arboretum Kilquade. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Pauline Short Foley and Luke O’Connor.
Kilquade Cup sponsors, Arboretum, put a major push on the opening of the new garden centre complex, in order to focus on putting out a winning golf team this year – they’ve been main sponsors since 2016, but have yet to lift the Cup! Next year, lads!
The 2024 Kilquade Plate, a 9-hole Scramble played in the morning, was won by Maire Ni Shiodhail, Sandie Wagstaff, Ruth Shiel and Sheila Harvey.
The morning prize presentation was made by Delgany Golf Club President, Willie Kennedy, PP, Fr. Des Hayden, and competition sponsor, Rita Fitzpatrick, with the competition dedicated to recently deceased, Seamus Fitzpatrick, who was a founding organiser of the parish golf fundraiser and former President of Delgany Golf Club.
The prestigious golf competition, now running for over fifty years, is the perfect day of team golf, dinner and entertainment in Delgany Golf Club. Music this year was by Niall Lewis and Take 2, and non-golfers joined their ‘swinging’ colleagues for the gala dinner and prize presentation.
Competition and raffle prizes were sponsored by Arboretum, Eddie Rockets Dundrum and Arklow, Willie Doyle Undertakers, Mark Kinsella Funeral Directors, Daly’s SuperValu and Delgany Golf Club. Luxury breaks were won for the Druids Glen Hotel, the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan, and The Courtyard Hotel in Leixlip.
Over twenty team golf prizes were presented on the day; practically one for everyone in the audience, so wannabe Rorys, Shanes or Leonas can pencil in the Kilquade Cup next year for a great day’s golf and craic.
In the meantime, the organising committee thank all of the sponsors, players and dinner guests, and the team at Delgany Golf Club, for their super support for a long-running local golfing occasion that contributes to the local parish and the families they support.
