The fund will bring forward an €8 million package, to preserve and promote local monuments and historical sites. The castle in Newcastle was originally constructed in the period between 1177 and 1184, by Hugh de Lacy. At the time Hugh de Lacy was the Governor of Ireland.
Cllr Stokes stated: “This funding is a positive development. Preserving and promoting our historical sites serves as a gateway to understanding the past.”
Nationwide 140 archaeological heritage projects throughout the country will receive funding, as part of the Community Monuments Fund for 2023. Across County Wicklow over €100,000 will be spent on five projects.
Cllr Stephen Stokes concluded: “The investment for 2023 is up by a third from last year across Ireland. County Wicklow is rich in archaeological heritage.
