Scott Calls For State Recognition Of Femicide

Green Party Spokesperson on Equality, Cllr Lourda Scott , is calling for the Government to introduce a legal definition of femicide.

Her call comes following the murders of two women in Ireland in recent days.

Cllr. Scott called for the collection of data on femicide to be collected as directed by the European Institute for Gender Equality. Currently the number of women who are murdered by men is collected by Women’s Aid, but not officially by the State.

Speaking on the matter Scott said: “The murder of Jamie Carmody, coming so soon after the murder of Adina Constantin, is absolutely devastating. My thoughts are with their families and friends, who are dealing with unimaginable loss.

“Eight women have now lost their lives to male violence in Ireland this year. Behind every one of those numbers is a woman who was loved, a family that has been left heartbroken, and a community that is grieving.

“We need to be able to properly understand the scale of this issue if we are going to prevent more women losing their lives. That means recognising femicide, recording it properly and using the data to create better policies and stronger protections.

“As Ireland prepares for its EU Presidency, we have an opportunity to show leadership and make sure violence against women is taken seriously.

“I am calling on Government to include a legal definition of femicide in Ireland’s next strategy on domestic, sexual and gender-based violence.”
