Sophie Morris Forced To Flee French Wildfires

reystones foodie influencer Sophie Morris and her family had to flee a French campsite at 3.30am this morning due to approaching wildfires.

As firefighters battled the blaze that broke out on Thursday just outside Biscarrosse, it wasn’t long before the evacuation of 23,000 people there.

Said Morris of the ordeal, ‘Actually seeing the flames in the forest as we were driving out and ash falling around the car was truly terrifying, and all I can think of are the people who live here leaving their homes and businesses, not sure if they will lose them; the town of Biscarrosse is burning.’

With the alarm being raised at 3.30am, the Morris family had to abandon their belongings and jump straight into their car. It was the culmination of ‘a very scary 12 hours’, Morris posted on Instagram, the family having been told at 7pm the previous day to stay put but be ready to evacuate.

Morris added that she was heartbroken for those who lived in this region just southwest of Bordeaux, having to abandon their homes. People without cars walked to the nearby lake to wait.

Many people have had to abandon this tourist region, with French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stating that 40,000 people had left or were leaving the Cap Ferret peninsula by the Bay of Arcachon.

Elsewhere in Europe, wildfires have seen more than 19,000 people evacuate Madrid, whilst thousands of Italian firefighters are currently battling blazes in Sicily and the Calabria region.

One firefighter lost his life in Sicily, whilst another two died battling a blaze near the Bordeaux airport.
