A Mother’s Love…

From fishermen to painters, from cancer survivors to your standard-issue chancers, all human life is here.

And Shay Clear too, of course.

Every now and then though, we meet someone who goes well above and beyond, into realms of self-resolve and determination that cruise an extra mile or two past our humble comprehension or understanding.

One such person is Sarah Gibson O’Gara.

It was back on July 3rd, 2010 that Sarah and her partner, Marty, welcomed their son, Martin, into the world. Born with severe brain damage, Martin has a chronic lung disease, an absence of swallow or gag reflexes, and struggles with seizures on a daily basis. Which may explain the 25 medications this six-year old has to take daily.

Having spent over half of his early life in Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital, Sarah and Marty decided in 2014 that, if their son was going to have a shorter time here than most, Martin should spend it at home, with his family. An initial wave of fundraising, by family and friends, saw Martin’s bedroom transformed into his own little hospital room, only with the extra added bonus of a loving family on tap.

This afternoon, with his little brother, Patrick, exuding enough energy for both of them, Martin watched on as his mother spoke about the battle to keep heart and family together…
