Green Party TD for Wicklow Steven Matthews has worked with Minister Malcolm Noonan to progress protections for the Basking Shark.

The Minister announced today (Thursday) that those protections will be finalised and confer legal protections on the sharks in the short term, while enhancing their protection long term.

Deputy Matthews said, “The basking shark is an important part of our Irish maritime area biodiversity. Our environment on land and at sea is threatened and I am determined with my Green Party colleagues to halt the decades of decline and put measures in place to protect habitats, species and the complex ecological web of life that supports us all.

“I am delighted to have had the opportunity to work with my colleague Green Party Minister Malcolm Noonan on many environmental issues affecting Wicklow and across the country. As Chair of the Oireachtas Housing, Local Government & Heritage Committee I have had the privilege to work on legislation and policy around the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the National Biodiversity Plan and Marine Protected Areas and these are all progressing well.

“Protecting our environment is what the Green Party does well and have done for many years.

“I’ll continue this work with determination and with the support of Wicklow residents for our children and future generations,” concluded Deputy Matthews.
