es Strelzow is one of those people that you really have to look up to.

And not only because the lanky Canadian feck is 6′ 11″.

There’s also the little matter of his walking away from a rather well-paid job as a financial trader and – despite having two young kids and an always-hungry wife to feed and clothe – dedicating his life to making toasties instead.

Luckily for the adventurous Desmond, the toasties he makes happen to be rather yummy, as proven by the pretty-much-permanent queues outside his distinctive green food truck every day.

Having set up at Greystones’ train station car park ten days ago, happy grilling couple Des and Julie have been a little overwhelmed by the response to Tall Boy Toasties. To the point that their feet haven’t quite touched the ground since, and their heads haven’t quite touched their pillows of late either.

“With two very young kids too, it’s been hectic,” explains Des, “but, to be honest, in a really good way. There’s something about seeing your little idea just explode, and to get a welcome here far beyond what you could have even dreamed of…”

Having been ready to switch on that grill since the beginning of the year, it was in the past few weeks that everything just fell into place for Des and Julie, from getting their food truck from Reward Catering in Rathnew and Hazel Kinsella doing up the artwork to a lifesaving Sunday logo wraparound by Kilcoole’s Sign On Time, “we’ve been very lucky. Especially with the location, thanks to John Byrne…”

Yep, everything’s coming up toasties, which is why we swung down this windy Sunday evening to chew the crust with Des – eye to chest.
