t was about five minutes into our interview with Laura Wood today that we realised that neither of us really had a feckin’ clue what we were talking about.

To be fair, what we were talking about were four highly acclaimed and pretty historic plays set in America’s deep south.

Mr Williams…

Due to hit The Whale in June, the four are 1-act plays going under the umbrella title of Americana, and the quartet comprises of Susan Glaspell’s 1916 offering Trifles, The Bond by American poets Amy Lowell and Robert Frost, Douglas Hill’s Heart In The Ground and Tennessee Williams’ Thank You, Kind Spirit, a play written in 1941 and not performed until 2003, 20 years after the playwright’s death.

So, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that two feckers from Greystones didn’t quite know what we were waffling on about. Other than the fact that Tennessee Williams was America’s Oscar Wilde.

Or thereabouts.

“My main reason for signing on for two of these plays is that Aideen Walton, the founder of Greystones Players, was directing,” says Laura. “I trust Aideen completely. I was part of her production of Juno And The Paycock, and it was just a miraculous experience.

“The fact that I knew little about the four plays being chosen for Americana only made me think, hey, I’m in for a real treat here. And so is the audience…”
