We used to come from Dundrum to Greystones in the late 50’s for our annual seaside holiday. Once we’d moved our stuff into our rented seafront house, we’d be off round to Mooney’s to buy buckets, spades and fishing nets. We called it “the seaside shop”. The front was festooned with everything you could want for fun at the beach.
Then I ended up living in Greystones with my own little family from the early 90’s, and we would bring our two girls down to Mrs. Mooney for their beach stuff.
Last summer, with a great sense of occasion, I brought my little 4 year-old grandson, Hugo, to Mrs. Mooney to get his own bucket & spade – fifty seven years after my own first visit. I’m so glad I got to do that, and to tell her, as well!
So sweet. As I said, going to head down for 5pm on Christmas Eve, to wish Mrs Mooney all the best in her retirement. Going to bring her a bottle of Jameson too, just to help launch her latest adventure…
I feel so sad that Bridie is closing her shop. She welcomed us to Greystones way back in the day, and has watched our two youngsters grow since then. Always for the chat, a smile and a laugh! What a woman!
Bridie, Ann-Marie and I wish you every enjoyment of your well-deserved retirement. Even more travelling now, I guess?
