t was way back on November 2nd 2013 that the-then Claire O’Brien decided Delgany needed a top-of-the-aga-range deli.

And the lady wasn’t wrong.

Jump to 12 years later, and the Bear Paw Deli is as much a part of the village as Farrelly’s butchers and Shay Clear’s cosmic culchie conundrums.

That there’s also a Bear Paw on Theatre Lane in Greystones and over in sunny Enniskerry proves just how good the food is too. Something that South African ex-pat Kevin Moes recognised instantly, the two soon getting together regularly and making sweet, sweet sandwiches.

Today, Kevin runs The Horse & Hound next door to the original Bear Paw, whilst Claire is their executive chef. A title that comes with free chips for life.

As Delgany celebrated its greatness on Saturday with a great big Heritage Day street party, we caught up with Claire to talking challenging times, changing menus and saving the village from mad street planners…
