After hundreds of entries were considered, three Wicklow students ended up winning top prizes in this year’s 72nd Texaco Children’s Art Competition.
In the 12-13 years age category, Charlotte Halpin Rooney (age 13), a pupil at Greystones Community College, won third prize for her work entitled Winter Memories. Her artwork is described by the final adjudicator – Irish visual artist, curator and educator Pauline O’Connell – as “a
sensitive graphite drawing, capturing a winter scene, in which the child’s checkered clothing is beautifully rendered, contrasting with the softness of the skin, and the blurred background adds depth and focus”.

In addition, two other Wicklow winners each won Special Merit Awards for artworks that Ms. O’Connell singled out for praise, stating that they “were imaginative and demonstrated high levels of skill and creativity”.
