Charlotte’s Only Scarlet After Texaco Art Win

After hundreds of entries were considered, three Wicklow students ended up winning top prizes in this year’s 72nd Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

In the 12-13 years age category, Charlotte Halpin Rooney (age 13), a pupil at Greystones Community College, won third prize for her work entitled Winter Memories. Her artwork is described by the final adjudicator – Irish visual artist, curator and educator Pauline O’Connell – as “a sensitive graphite drawing, capturing a winter scene, in which the child’s checkered clothing is beautifully rendered, contrasting with the softness of the skin, and the blurred background adds depth and focus”.

In addition, two other Wicklow winners each won Special Merit Awards for artworks that Ms. O’Connell singled out for praise, stating that they “were imaginative and demonstrated high levels of skill and creativity”.

Winning in two separate categories, they were Moya Egan (8) from Powerscourt National School, Enniskerry and Kate Seckington (18) from St. Mary’s College, Arklow.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first Competition held in 1955.

This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Wicklow and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.
