Coast Guards’ Boathouse Finally Comes In

t was happy faces all round down at the Greystones Coast Guards and Garda HQs this afternoon, as the official thumbs up was given to their much-needed home improvements.

For the Coast Guards, it’s a simple case of a brand, spanking new home down on the harbour.

Which is right by the sea, handily enough.

For the Garda station, it’s a much-needed upgrade to something resembling habitable. 

Jaysus, we had no idea that the boys and girls in blue were living in what would appear to be an abandoned shack.

It was back in September 2016 that the original plan for a two-storey Greystones Coast Guards building was suddenly abandoned, the cost having reportedly gone far beyond the budget. So, it was back to the drawing board – once tempers had died down – and the new single-storey HQ should be up on its feet by 2020.

And once the coast guards have vacated their old building right beside the garda station, work can begin on pimping the latter.

This afternoon, local-lad-done-good Simon Harris was there with Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, the Minister of State responsible for the Office of Public Works, to officially announce that both projects had now been signed and sealed, and should, all going well, be delivered shortly.

Oh, and we checked – Boxer got his name basically because – yep! – the mad fecker likes to box.
