t’s been a long time coming, but in December, repair works were finally completed on a number of houses at Farrankelly Close.

A total of 11 properties were mercifully brought closer to living standards by Wicklow County Council.

But there’s plenty more work to be done, something that was discussed at the latest Greystones Municipal District meeting.

Residents at the Greystones estate have long been battling such issues as damp, mould, draughts, an intermittent water supply and an access ramp that wasn’t the correct gradient for wheelchairs.

WCC officials explained that €340,000 had been allocated at the start of 2025 for planning maintenance and that they had applied to the Department of Housing to spend the balance on Farrankelly. By October of that year, €200,000 was left for that funding, and was used carried out the current works at the estate.

The selling off of derelict properties by Wicklow County Council to fund further regeneration works was also discussed, with monies raised earmarked for further works at Farrankelly.

Which now should get underway during the summer, with WCC’s director of services Michael Nicholson stating, “We have tendered a contractor for the remaining windows and doors. A contractor has been appointed. His next job will be to measure and then to order.

“I believe it takes five to six weeks to get the windows made and delivered. And then they’ll be installed.”

Wicklow County Council have 4,500 social houses to maintain, many of which are in need of energy-efficient upgrades as well as structural repairs and window replacements.
