Now, over to Layla…
At times of uncertainty, upheaval and change, like we are witnessing in the world at the moment, it can often feel overwhelming and like we have no control.
Local acupuncturist Layla O’Mara says that it is important that we ‘put our own oxygen masks on first’ so that we can navigate these tough times and help others the best way we can.
1. Acknowledge how you are feeling with kindness. We can sometimes push our own feelings away when others are suffering more. Speaking to yourself with kindness – placing your hand on your chest, or holding your opposite wrist and saying to yourself ‘I’m really feeling this today, this is challenging’, helps to allow those feelings in and be ok.
2. Pay attention to what you are paying attention to. 24/7 news feeds put us on high, fight or flight alert. Pick a window to read the news or scroll your feed and then turn it off. Don’t read or scroll while eating or before you go to sleep. 3. Replace the scroll with a few deep breaths, a stretch or movement of your body. Breathing out for longer than you breathe in can really help – in for 4, out for 7 for example.
4. Let nature soothe you. Regardless of the weather, get outside. Take a walk. Sit on a bench. Take off your shoes and paddle in the sea. Nature is a wonderful regulator of our nervous systems.
5. Choose one simple action you can do to help others. You can volunteer or donate or raise awareness, but it can also be as simple as sending support and love while you are breathing in and out.
