Greystones Care Centre Fails HIQA Checks

The Health Information And Quality Authority watchdog have issued a report detailing a new Greystones care centre’s failure to comply with standards.

Having only opened last December, the five-bed house cares for people with intellectual disabilities.

According to the results of an unannounced April visit by HIQA – their second this year – the Sunbeam House-run centre was seriously non-compliant in two areas.

Incidents of harm at the centre were either not reported to the person in charge or were reported retrospectively, with some staff members only reporting to the person in charge 17 days after the event. The report also found that some of these incidents were not appropriately investigated in accordance with Sunbeam House Services’ policy, which meant that parents of residents and family members were not informed of the incidents.

Revealed by RTE, the report also contained a claim by a newly-appointed employee at the centre that residents’ care needs were being intentionally ignored by a staff member in order to punish him.

In conclusion, the HIQA report found that the centre was fully compliant with just one of the 12 standards reviewed, substantially complied with another, complied moderately with eight, and was seriously non-compliant in two areas.
