here was much munching and hugging aplenty at this year’s Happy Pear Apple Pie showdown.

Now in its 13th year, the sun shone – as always – and the pies themselves ranged from imaginative to inventive and even, in one or two cases, to incredibly stoned.

The combination of warm sun and free pie brought out the best in people, naturally enough, and the sweet aroma of homecooking filling the air was just about enough to make a few people positively dizzy with delight.

As the Pear continues to move on up commercially – when, exactly, did the café staff go from Woodstock to Altamont, by the way? – it’s great to see that the simple pleasures such as the annual Apple Pie Competition are still part of the towering twins’ Greystones groove.

When all the scores were counted up, and the plates had all been licked, Marcin Scott won 1st place for adults, whilst for the kids, it was Alana Harrington.

Suffice to say, they all looked like winners to us.
