Kilcoole Kids Joins School Strike For Climate Action

Students from Kilcoole’s Coláiste Chraobh Abhann are joining with other young people in Ireland and around the world in the global School Strike For Climate Action.

Alongside SEK-Dublin up in Windgates, Temple Carrig in Blacklion and North Wicklow Educate Together in Bray, the CAA protesters are among nine schools around the country calling on other Irish students to join them on a mass protest during the school day of Friday, March 15th.

Inspired by 16-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg’s recent call for action at the UN Climate Change COP24 conference in December, the protests have been planned to highlight the dangers posed by the failure of adults to address climate change.

How the individual protests will be conducted is to be decided by the various student groups over the coming days, with possible targets being outside school gates, the Dail and local government buildings around the country.

For Pádraig Conaty, deputy principal at North Wicklow Educate Together, in tackling climate change, the “students are activating key skills, engaging with global issues, and learning to become active citizens. Active citizenship and providing a real and meaningful platform for student voices is a cornerstone of our school“.

A Twitter account, @PullTheBrakes, has been created for activists to link their efforts, whilst a student-built website has just been launched this week. There will also be a protest at 1.30pm that afternoon in Burnaby Park.
