Simon Harris has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Education that a Letter of Intent has now issued for the major extension and refurbishment of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in Kilcoole.

He stated that this development represents the most significant step forward to date in delivering the long promised expansion of the school. The Letter of Intent signals that the project is formally advancing and moves the school into the decisive phase in which the works can proceed toward contract signing and preparation for construction.

The project will deliver accommodation for 1,000 pupils and six dedicated special education needs classrooms, ensuring that the school can meet long term demand across Kilcoole, Greystones and surrounding communities.

Speaking today Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “This progress has been a long time coming for families who have faced pressure on places and facilities.

“For parents in Kilcoole, Greystones, and the surrounding areas, the pressure on school places has been a source of genuine anxiety.

“Today’s news provides the certainty that families deserve. This letter of intent moves us away from the drawing board and toward the construction site.

“This project will transform the education in Kilcoole.

“Most importantly and something close to me is the inclusion of six special education classrooms ensures that our education system remains inclusive and that every child in Wicklow has the best possible start in life.

“I want to pay a particular tribute to the school leadership, the Board of Management, the patrons, and the parents.

“They have advocated tirelessly for this facility and today is a recognition of that hard work.”

Tánaiste Simon Harris said ongoing housing growth and population change in the area has come with its challenges and said that proper educational infrastructure is essential.

Simon Harris concluded: “The focus now must be on maintaining this momentum. We have the green light now we need to get to contract signing and get boots on the ground without delay.

“I will continue to work closely with the school and the Department to ensure we see construction begin as quickly as possible.”
