Lidl Goes A Long Way In Eco Battle

As the UN announce that we have just 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe, it’s good to see that some corporations are doing more than giving their logo a greenwash.

Removing plastic packaging from its entire fruit and vegetable range across all stores in Ireland before Christmas is just one of the major steps announced by the supermarket chain Lidl today.

The German retail giant will also be taking all single use plastics – such as straws, disposable plates, cups and cutlery – off its shelves, whilst black plastic packaging – currently not recycled in Ireland or the UK – will also be scrapped from the supermarket chain. 

This latter move means that over 65 tonnes of black plastic waste will be avoided annually just from Lidl’s fruit and veg stalls.

Also due for the chop are plastic-stemmed cotton buds, whilst all single-use plastic items are being replaced with biodegradable alternatives.

Today’s move follows last year’s announcement by Lidl that they had achieved ‘zero waste to landfill’. At the same time, there was a ban placed on microbeads in all cosmetic and household ranges.

By 2022, the discount supermarket giant hope to use 20% less plastic packaging, and have 100% recyclable own-brand packaging by 2025.

Fair fecks. Now, go and do your bit, by refusing to buy any product with unnecessary plastic packaging. And that includes small plastic bottles, ya eejit.
