Local Property Tax Gives Back To Wicklow

Tánaiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris has today welcomed a significant funding increase for Wicklow County Council, as part of reforms to the Local Property Tax (LPT) agreed by Government.

As a result of changes to how LPT funds are allocated, Wicklow County Council will receive an additional €4,458,940 annually starting in 2026, providing greater flexibility and investment in local services and infrastructure.

Speaking today, Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “This is a major win for Wicklow and a clear example of how we are putting money back into communities.

“With this extra €4.45 million annually, Wicklow County Council will be better placed to invest in services, improve infrastructure, and meet the needs of a growing population.”

“It’s also recognition of the reality that counties like Wicklow where the population has been rising need greater resources to match that growth.

“Speaking to constituents on a weekly basis I know how important it is we invest in our roads, local housing, urban renewal or community supports.

“This funding will directly benefit local residents.”

The changes are part of a broader Government reform of the LPT system, which also includes:

⦿ A revaluation of properties in November 2025.

⦿ Modest increases in LPT charges for many households, with most remaining in their current valuation bands.

⦿ A new requirement that additional retained funding be directed in part toward urban regeneration and local infrastructure improvements.

Tánaiste Simon Harris added: “This reform ensures that Wicklow keeps more of what it raises locally—and puts it to work locally. It’s about giving communities like ours the tools to shape their own future.”

The new allocations will take effect from January 2026, with local authorities required to notify the Revenue Commissioners of any further rate variation decisions by 31 August 2025.
