here’s many an honour in this fair country of ours that you can rightly be damn proud of…

The Rose of Tralee, the High King of Tara, the Queen of South Place, the, eh, Duke of Hazard – the list goes on and on.

Of all the honours, titles, gongs and rosettes that can possibly be stamped upon an Irish person though, perhaps the finest is having a snug named after you.

And that’s just the honour that has been bestowed upon the great Liam Doyle, late of this parish, and a man who, it has just been verified by the Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin, spent 87.6% of his entire life in one pub snug or another.

Fair play.

This afternoon, Monday, June 27th, a mere 9 days after the 94-year-old Greystones legend’s passing, his two children, Declan and Louise, joined The Burnaby’s manager, Billy Byrne, as they christened this quiet corner of the pub The Liam Doyle Snug.

And the man is in good company, joining the likes of Ronnie Drew and Paul Ashford on these hallowed walls.

So, next time you’re looking for some smart company – a good listener whose favourite motto was always “Least said, soonest mended” – head into The Burnaby, and have yourself a quiet one with Liam Doyle.

You should, of course, buy one for the great man himself too. Just leave it behind the bar when you’re going.  Declan said he’ll make sure it finds a good home.
