The Heritage office of Wicklow County Council is delighted to announce a new publication Glaciers, Glens and Granite: an Exploration of the Geology of County Wicklow.

This is a joint project with Geological Survey Ireland and is published by Wordwell Books.

The book was officially launched in Wicklow Town Library on Tuesday (22nd November) by Cllr Tommy Annesley, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, who stated: “Geological heritage is a hugely important asset for county Wicklow. It provides our distinctive Wicklow landscape and scenery; the building materials for our monuments and buildings and contributes so much to the fabric of people’s lives in the county. This new book is a fantastic way to communicate geology to new and wider audiences in a colourful and user-friendly format.”

Mr Brian Gleeson, Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council, commented that the Council is pleased to have had the opportunity to work in partnership with Geological Survey Ireland and the Heritage Council on an audit of sites of geological and landscape significance in 2014. This new publication, he said, was a welcome progression of that work and will help to shed light on over 60 special places identified in the audit, that collectively make up the geological story of Wicklow.

Koen Verbruggen, Director of Geological Survey Ireland, and Wicklow native, said: “County Wicklow is fortunate to have an amazingly rich and varied geological heritage and Geological Survey Ireland is keen to promote greater awareness and appreciation of this heritage through this publication. This book is intended to be an accessible point for people to begin to see what is around them with fresh eyes, to have the broad brush of the landscape interpreted in pictures and user-friendly language.”
