ith yummy treats in just about every nook and refurbished cranny of this town, the search for Greystones’ best ice cream is proving tougher by the year.

Even with reigning champs Something Nice hanging up their aprons, there’s still the arrival of such newbies as Gino’s, Sonny’s, The Waffler and Mooch to contend with.

Throw in the constant ambush throughout the summer of roving packs of ice cream vans – including those with mafia connections – and sure, the choice when it comes to getting your fancy tickled and whipped around here is pretty much endless.

Still, this year’s annual Póg Mo Cone vote did have an end point, and when those votes were all counted up, there was one very clear winner.

The mighty Spendlove’s Cafe, down at Greystones harbour.

“This is amazing,” said proprietor Nigel when we swung down with that coveted Greystones’ Finest 99 award this afternoon. “We’re very proud of our ice-cream here at Spendlove’s, but we also know that plenty of other outlets around the town are too.

“It’s really all down to those who voted for us, and I just want to say, on behalf of everyone here at Spendlove’s, a big, big thank you to them all.”

Also in attendance for the handing over of the sacred scroll was Paddy Holohan of SuperValu, Daly’s fine supermarket having been kind enough to sponsor this year’s competition.

And congrats to GG reader Grainne Wafer too, who cast the winning vote for 10 free award-winning 99s, currently awaiting your love and devouring devotion down at Spendlove’s…
