And that job often involves saving lives, something many of those living up on Windgates were all too aware of as those flames edged ever closer to their homes.
For many, it was an emotional few days, and the sense of relief, and gratitude, when our local firefighters’ four days of battling the fire finally resulted in the all-clear, and life up on the hill could get back to normal.
Not that the people of Windgates were going to forget the brave and incredible work Greystones Fire Brigade had done over those four days, and so it was that they held a whip-round and presented the lads with a considerable wad of thank yous.
The boys were flattered, of course, and a little flabbergasted, but they couldn’t accept such a gift. House rules. When the residents of Windgates refused to take it back, the lads decided to purchase a defibrillator for outside the fire station on Victoria Road. Turning their gift into a gift for the town.
And tonight, they invited those generous residents down for a lesson in how to use this life-saving device.
With a little help from Premier First Aid’s Maurice, the Greystones firefighters took the Windgates neighbours through the procedures – so that they too, might one day save a life.
So, a big thank you somehow managed to become an even bigger thank you back.
The defibrillator should be installed towards the end of October, by which time there will be a whole new gang of lifesavers walking among us here in Greystones…
