head, Wicklow 12 points down at half-time against, well, Down before going on to win the All-Ireland at Croke Park on Saturday…
The final score reading Wicklow 1-21, Down 2-16.
So, hardly surprising that, when the Tailteann Cup included Éire Óg Greystones on its victory lap this evening, spirits were high.
Very, very high.
There were some local heroes involved in that glorious win, after all.
Here’s the lowdown from the club…
The Tailteann Cup arrived into Pairc Mhic Shuain de Barra this evening at 6.30pm along with Éire Óg Greystones heroes of Saturday’s game, Joe Prendergast, Oisin Murphy and Dr. Nicholas Fay.
Just so we could all find out just how they did it.
Not since the heady days of the Murphy Cup win in 2007 under the management of the great ‘Micko’ Dwyer has there been such euphoria in the County.
Greystones people at the match screamed their heads off at Croke Park on Saturday as the boys overturned a twelve
points deficit at half time to win. A flying wing back, Joe Prendergast confidently secured possession and distributed it calmly whilst all around him was sheer mayhem. Strains of ‘There’s only one Garden County’ rang out as the comeback of all comebacks materialised. As the cup went around in the after-match victory parade, Joe spotted some of the young supporters from Greystones.
He broke off and made his way over to them for a memorable ‘selfie’.
Oisín Murphy is also part of the extended panel. This is his breakthrough year and at 20 years of age he has a big future ahead. A tall, pacy and determined full forward. The fleet-footed player strikes fear into opposition full backs. His brother Gearóid also plays for the club.

His magic bottle worked on Saturday last as the Wicklow players under the leadership of the colossus that is captain Dean Healy played like men coming to defend a fortress. The years of hunger for success was never more evident than in that split moment in time in Croker, when the cognitive overload exploded.
The next big date for the diary is the opening round of the club championship in Aughrim against Rathnew on Sunday, August 2nd at 1pm. You can see these new warriors in action as you support our own club.
Boom! Big thanks to John McGowan for all the shots from today’s Tailteann Cup celebration – full gallery here.
