Taking The WC Out Of WCC

Given that here at GG we have a habit of calling a spade a little feckin’ shovel, the one area we try to avoid is politics – where, increasingly, perception is just as important as actual policies.

Throw your arm around one politician, and, in one sweeping move, you’ve basically slapped all the other across the back of the head.

When it comes to the health and well-being of this town being messed with though, we are very much be an equal opportunities offender. It doesn’t matter whether you’re one of the supposed good guys or the notorious bad guys.

In light of the current High Court corruption case against former Wicklow County Council manager Eddie Sheehy throwing up all kinds of crazy behind-the-scenes shenanigans, we thought it might be a good time to sit down with Councillor Tom Fortune to take stock. 

Tom has been attending the court hearings daily, whilst his outspoken views on what he regards as organisational corruption within Wicklow County Council have been denied a platform at recent WCC meetings.

Naturally, we wanted to avoid making any direct allegations against the man currently at the centre of an escalating High Court slanging match – former colleague Donal Ó Laire claiming Sheehy was “up to this neck in corruption”, the latter subsequently bouncing back by this week calling the former a “liar and perjurer”…

Instead looking at what Fortune believes are the fundamental flaws currently at the heart of Wicklow County Council – and how they can be fixed…
