The young guns of Temple Carrig’s 1st Year football team have romped home to their first title win with a fine victory over St Ciaran’s College.
The scoreline said it all – 5-3 – with Temple Carrig dominating the game throughout.
Mainly because of, we’re told, all that sideline psycho screaming by proud mum Amanda Sweeney. Two of St Ciaran’s players ended up with a stutter.
Here’s coach John McGuinness with the lowdown…
Temple Carrig’s 1st Year Football team won their first ever Leinster Champions League title yesterday. It came after a 5-3 win against a very strong St. Ciaran’s College, Kells. TCG started the game on the back foot after a wonderful strike by the Kells front man put them ahead after just one minute. Temple Carrig then woke up and started to apply the pressure.
A brilliant strike by Hugh Parker cannoned off the crossbar with Jack Ward there to finish off the rebound for the equaliser. A few minutes later some brilliant link up play by the creative midfielders of Matt Murray and Luke Smyth saw Lennart Krummel in space to deliver a cross to Hugh Parker to put Temple Carrig’s into the lead. Two more goals from Hugh Parker and Luke Smyth sent the blood and gold of TCG into the break with a 4-1 lead. This was a game of two halves as Kells came out fighting back to 4-3. Some great saves by goalkeeper James O Dowd kept TCG with a slender lead. An excellent through ball by man of the match Matt Murray then set Jack Ward away to seal the trophy with a 5-3 win.
The talented young side won the Wicklow-Wexford league early on in the year and advanced to the Leinster stages as a result with some tough victories along the way. The side were just two minutes away from being eliminated in the Semi-Final by Tullow CS until Tom Meyler popped up with a last minute equaliser to send the game to extra time which saw TCG come out with a 4-3 win. The long season saw Temple Carrig come up against some excellent sides along the way. The lads are looking forward to an exciting year defending their title next year.
Boom! Congrats to the boys. And here’s hoping Amanda has her voice back in time for the next match.
