here are plenty of theories floating around Delgany right now as to just why the sleepy little village has seen a sudden surge in crime since Christmas.

Some believe it could be just a simple case of bad luck, a criminal fraternity suddenly recognising Delgany as a soft target.

Others argue that it’s part of a county-wide sweep by a criminal gang hitting unsuspecting targets. There’s also the belief that this sudden upsurge in crime might also be linked to the December arrival of temporary social housing in the village. 

The rumour mill has it that the family in question have been run out of two previous estates, and were subsequently given emergency accommodation by Wicklow County Council in the highly controversial Blackberry Lane development. Certainly, the idea of moving a bunch of Love/Hate extras onto the set of Glenroe is plainly asking for trouble, but, hey, let’s not forget, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Even those with a long track record for causing trouble.

Following last week’sfoiled robbery at Hunters Brook (the three suspects reportedly known to police), and a spike in shoplifting, vandalism and break-ins in the village, we caught up with the town’s unofficial mayor, and general busy-body, Anthony Farrelly to discuss just what can be done in the face of this growing problem…
