Delgany Burglar Caught Napping Gets Three Years

serial burglar from Blackberry Lane has been jailed for three years after he was discovered hiding under a bed at his home.

Jamie O’Brien was also convicted last year after being arrested in Delgany waving a frying pan whilst shouting “Fuck off, gardaí!”.

The 32-year-old’s most significant conviction through was in 2016, when he was given a 10-year sentence for the burglary, assault and false imprisonment of a Bray pensioner, 89-year-old Eva Sutton.

At Dublin’s Criminal Courts of Justice this week, O’Brien pleaded guilty to burglary at Hawksmoor Restaurant, College Green, Dublin 2 on July 25th 2025.

Garda Darren Reynolds revealed that he had responded to a report of a burglary at the restaurant at 7.30am that morning, a Hawksmoor employee having disturbed O’Brien as he rummaged through the staff locker rooms. Fleeing the scene with stolen items, O’Brien was recognised by gardaí through CCTV footage. When they later called to O’Brien’s Blackberry Lane home, he once again fled, but the following day, gardaí were admitted inside the property and found their suspect hiding under a bed. He was interviewed and charged, and has been in custody ever since.

Defending O’Brien, John Temple BL stated that his client had gone down the wrong path from an early age, his father leaving the family home, thus leaving his son without the direction needed.

He also told the court that O’Brien had significant mental health difficulties and was on the prison psychological service waiting list, plus he was heavily abusing drugs at the time of the latest offence.

It was also pointed out in court that O’Brien has 46 previous convictions, including 12 previous for burglary.

Judge Sheahan imposed a three-year sentence suspending the final six months, backdating the sentence for time spent in custody.
