Given that we have reported daily on the incredible work done by Greystones Fire Brigade and the rest of the emergency services as they battled a raging Bray Head fire over four days, we thought we should let that story sit and percolate.

And then we got a letter of thanks from a mother up on Cliff Road, where the family home had seen that raging fire a little too close up and personal.

The mum in question is Greystones psychologist Niamh Delmar, and this is her letter…

Dear crews,

We can’t thank you enough for saving our homes and for protecting us. Despite the intense heat of the sun, the relentless flames and efforts required, you all did it in the friendliest of ways. Our 7-year-old was in awe being shown the equipment and trucks, and what could have been a traumatic event for him turned into an adventure .

It is only when you see flames so close to your home and when you get evacuated that you realize it is far more than a house. Memories, photo albums, favorite toys and part of your identity are all part of it. We could have come home to ashes, only for you.

And a huge thanks to our defence forces for the water drops. And to the Guards, who helped keep us calm, getting us all out and the cats, dogs and kids!
